The shop

One shop, and only the one. The donuts, the cakes, the deli and the ice cream all come out of this building, where the bakery has stood since 1924.

Case 03 — The route
A hundred years on one road.
- 1922
Kuno Plehn, from Kiel, Germany, opens a bakery on Shelby Street.
- 1924
The bakery moves to Shelbyville Road in St. Matthews. It’s still here.
- 1927
An ice cream works is added. We still make our ice cream in the back.
- 1937
The year of the great Ohio River flood — part of the story the family still tells.
- 1945
Bernie Bowling, Sr. buys the bakery. It passes to his sons, then their children.
- Today
The fourth generation of the same family runs the counter.

Every wedding cake starts with a free consultation.
Complimentary consultations, Tuesday through Saturday, 9am to 3pm. Price comes from size, flavors, fillings, icing and design — there’s no set price per slice, so we talk it through with you.
